FIND THE SITES LINKING TO YOURS

Want to find how many sites are linking to yours? Simple!
Go to www.infoseek.com and in the search box type
Link:
followed by your URL
eg
Link:http://www.networx.com.au/mall/secrets

Use a Meta Search Engine.

When you're looking for something online to get the
best results you should use at least a couple of search
engines. Or use one of the "newish" Meta search
engines which search a number of search engines
simultaneously.

The well known Dogpile ( http://www.dogpile.com ), for instance,
consults 25 search engines and directories to come up with
its results.
Others are:

Mamma www.mamma.com

All4One www.all4one.com

Profusion http://topaz.designlabs.ukans.edu/profusion

Savvy Search  http://guaraldi.cs.colostate.edu:2000/form

MetaCrawler www.metacrawler.com

WIN A COOL SITE AWARD

Think your site is good enough to win one of those "Cool Site of the Day"
awards? You can find a clickable list of 31 of them at
http://www.submit2.com/?RFX17269
But it's not just a list of Cool Site Awards. All up there are 162 places to
submit your site, including search engines, and general directories. Of
course, Submit2 are after your money, but you can manually submit to any of
the 162 links for free - it just means filling in forms at each site.
Give it a go. Winning an award for your site can give it a huge kick along.

GIVE YOUR WEB SITE A QUICK TUNE UP

Do yourself a big favour and visit Web Site Garage for a tune
up. The mechanics at Web Site Garage  help you to get peak performance from your Web site. There's a 5 point checkup
to diagnose common mistakes in Web site maintenance and
promotion. And there are tools to address the three critical areas
in maintaining and promoting a successful Web site.

Importantly Web Site Garage tells you how long it takes
your home page to load with various speed modems.
Web Site Garage indicted that my site was taking a bit
too long to load, so I carved many seconds of the loading time
by reducing the size of the graphics
see the results at http://www.networx.com.au/mall/secrets

Web Site Garage is very impressive, and most of the
services it offers - including shrinking your gifs - are
free. Visit the mechanics at
http://www.websitegarage.com/ref.cgi?banner=refc00c4f11

(ps. I'll be honest here. I get a commission if any of you
pay money for their services - but I'm not expecting to earn
much because the FREE services they offer are so
comprehensive and impressive. It's hard to see how they can
profit when they're giving so much great stuff away)

WEBSITE LOADING TIME

Surfers and casual visitors will not wait. You have about 15/20
seconds to catch and keep a visitor. Your home page should load quickly.
Our own "all the secrets..." site at
http://www.networx.com.au/mall/secrets
was far too slow to come up because of the java based "hover"
buttons we were using. Last week we ripped them out and replaced
them with a quick loading image map. Take a look. The index
page now loads 3 times faster.
To make your page fast keep graphic files small (optimize all
graphics with "Gif Wizard" at http://www.gifwizard.com),
backgrounds simple and by using height and width tags with
every graphic. The height/width tags will force the text to load
first giving the user something to read while the graphics load.
It is also a good idea to use ALT tags with the graphic tag so that
the graphic is identified to the user while it loads.

HOW TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHERE
YOU RANK IN THE SEARCH ENGINE LISTINGS

Have you got that sinking feeling of not being able to find your
site when you type your keywords into a search engine?

We all know that unless you come in the first few pages people
aren't likely to find you. But how do you know where you are
in the search engine rankings?

Try using PositionAgent's free trial service at
http://www.positionagent.com/free.htm

This free version of PositionAgent lets you view the search engine
rankings for your website on 10 top search engines for a selected
keyword or phrase.

A warning though. It can be very upsetting. My site didn't show
up at all in the top 500. After I'd finished choking I searched for
some of the entreprenarial sites I like. I felt much better when
Jim Daniels Bizweb 2000 site came in at 478 with one search
engine, and, like me, nowhere in the others.

USING A FLOATING FRAME

If you want to display a document page within an HTML page, you
can use IE3.0's Floating Frame option. You can include a floating
frame in your page by using the following code:
<IFRAME SRC="PageInside.htm" NAME="Float1"></IFRAME>

Since floating frames are part of the document object, not the
"regular" frames collection, you'll need to handle them
differently than normal frames.  To access a floating frame on
the current page, use this code:
document.Float1.Location.Href = "PageInside.htm"
To access a floating frame in a different frame, use this:
top.frames[n].document.Float1.Location.Href = "PageInside.htm"

STOP PEOPLE "SPAMMING YOU"

If you ever post to newsgroups you'll know that
within days you'll receive lots of unsolicited email.
The kind that most people refer to as "Spam"
(I find most of it interesting reading and don't mind
receving it)

People use email grabbing software to pull thousands
of names and email addresses from the newsgroups
in just a few minutes, then they sell your details or
add you to their own mailing lists and send you
unsolicited mail.

However, if this kind of mail annoys you, there are
simple ways to stop most of it.

One way is to add the word remove into your email
address:

One of the emails I use is wiley@writeme.com. Posting
to newsgroups I could put wiley@REMOVEwriteme.com
as my return address. This would fool the email grabbing
programs, but a real person wanting to write to you
would just delete REMOVE. However when a "spammer"
is checking through the emails his program has trouble
with he'll easily see the word REMOVE.

So here's a far better way to avoid "spam".
A simple full stop is all it takes.
Simply add an extra dot before the com
wiley@writeme..com and most of your spam will stop.

A SUBSCRIPTION FORM FOR YOUR WEB SITE

Newsletters are becoming very popular. If you're thinking of
starting your own you must make it easy for people to subscribe.
Here's the HTML code to use on your web page:

form method=post action=mailto:subscribe@myplace.com?subject="SUBSCRIBE">
<INPUT TYPE="submit" VALUE="YES! Sign Me Up For myplace Newsletter!">
<br>Forms capable browser required - Just Press the button <b>ONCE</b>!
<br>Nothing will appear to happen . . . you'll automatically be added
<br>. . . you don't need to type anything or fill out a form!
</form>

Copy the lines above and paste them into your web page. Be sure
to change "myplace.com" and "myplace" with your domain name and
the name of your newsletter.

HOW TO PROFIT FROM "SPAM"

Most of us junk our spam mail, but you could look on it as a
business opportunity instead. Everyone spamming you is in
the Internet marketing business, just like we are. So why
not offer them your business opportunity or product?

When I receive a spam I now send this email in reply:

*This is being sent as a "Reply" to a Biz Opp e-mail only.*
Everyone gets unsolicited e-mail. It is a fact of life on
the Internet.

Instead of just deleting those ads, why not click on "Reply"
and paste the following advertisement page in? Add your
own ad below the "Place Ads Below This Line" and send
via the "Reply" for every unsolicited e-mail you get daily!

Ad 2:

I send an ad for each business opportunity I'm promoting, and for each product I'm selling. It's hard to know the direct results from replying to spam, but
* it makes me feel good
* it gets my messages to prospects who might otherwise never see them.
* it hardly takes any time.
Of course, a lot of the spam replies bounce because of a false address, or I receive more info from an autoresponder. But the autoresponder usually includes a useable email address to forward my spam reply post to.
