Letter
from Phil...
tons to tell
you about, and show you, this week, so I hope you've got a bit of
time.
First off...announcing
Profit Blog
You've
probably read about the blogging phenomena, it's getting lots of
column space in places like The New York Times, Fast Company, PC
Mag.
If you're not
familiar with them here's an article you can read in PC
Mag plus a whole batch of them here from Business2
magazine.
Anyway no one
is doing much about using Blogs (the name originated from "WeB
logs" which are online personal diarys) as a marketing tool,
so I thought I'd jump in now and start learning about blogging and
if they can be used as a vehicle for us to make some money together.
I believe they
can.
What I'm going
to do with Profit Blog, for instance, is develop it as a sort of
news feed announcing new affiliate programs and things I think will
make you (and me) some income. But there's also going to be tips,
ideas, general waffle...much like this newsletter in fact, but just
short bytes which you can choose to have emailed to you the minute
I write them.
Before you sign
up for the email version though, be aware that if I make 3 posts
a day you'll get 3 short emails from me. Most likely though I'll
probably only make 4 or 5 posts a week, and some weeks a lot less.
It depends on if I've got anything to tell you that can't wait for
the next issue of this newsletter.
Like I say,
I'm not usually going to put up several posts a day, but I've put
a few there today so you can get a feel for what it's all about.
Anyhow, you
can visit Profit
Blog here.
I'm using the
$35 a year pro service from http://www.blogger.com
but
you can easily set up a perfectly good one up for free.
oh yes, I didn't
design the site. I grabbed a free template from http://www.blogskins.com
and had it automatically uploaded to my blog.
The other thing
is the domain name Profitblog. I did it on the cheap by having it
hosted in a sub directory of my main www.ozemedia.com
site. This is not the ideal way to do things and I'll probably move
it to it's own web host soon. But it is a fast way of setting up
a site.
2. Simpleurl...
I registered the Profitblog domain name at http://www.simpleurl.com
which is $12 with free domain forwarding to any link you nominate.
Perhaps this
good be a great way of linking to your best affiliate
programs. Instead of something like http://www.buyingwebbusinesses.com/cgi-bin/ccShare.pl?cmnd=newsharer&id=minisites
you could go
to simpleurl , plonk down your $12 and get a domain
and redirect like http://www.buywebsites.com Though because of
the framing technique used you're not going to get the domain
name ranked in search engines.
ok..that's enough
on blogging.
Go and check
out http://www.profitblog.com
3. My site stinks....
maybe mine doesn't...well not too much at least. But perhaps your
does. If you want an honest opinion on what's wrong with your site
and how to improve it you need to visit
http://www.ozemedia.com/stinky/
You'll find
out whether you can earn serious money from your site
before you start spending money on promoting it.
4. Big changes
at Site Build It!...get in quick...
If you've been thinking of investing in a Site
Build It! site I wouldn't hold of any longer or you'll miss
out on something big.
Well you won't
miss out, but it will cost you more.
What's happening
is that 3 NEW modules are coming to Site
Build It! in the near future (May-June window). I've just bought
2 new SBI
sites myself to use for my digital photography sites.
An *E-commerce
Module* provides you with a merchant account
to clear credit cards online. Plus, you'll have the ability to digitally
deliver your e-goods in much the same fashion that SiteSell does
now.
An *Affiliate
Module* will allow you to build and manage your own
affiliate program through your Site Build It! site without buying
software like AssocTrac or going through any outside companies
like Commission Junction.
A *Mailout Module*
will allow you to build, manage, and contact
several E-mail Address Lists (in both text and HTML formatted
e-mails). You'll be able to run:
1) Opt-in e-zine
2) Customer e-zines
3) Affiliate e-zine
There's also
going to to a powerful server-side module which will provide Photoshop-quality
logos and navbars which you can build with a few keystrokes and
button clicks.
Ok...that's
all good news for Site
Build It! owners.
The bad news
is it's going to cost more, which is fair enough with all these
added benefits and features.
The good news
is that if If you're already a Site
Build It!
subscriber when the new modules are launched, these modules
will AUTOMATICALLY be added to the remainder of your current annual
subscription at no cost.
5. How to unleash
astonishing profits with Google AdWords Select...
The first ebook / special report I've seen on how to use Google's
Adword properly has arrived on the scene.
This special
report, "21
Ways to Maximize Your Profits on Google
AdWords Select," will show you 21 specific ways to dramatically
increase your chances of beating your competitors at the Google
AdWords Select game.
Google AdWords
Select offers powerful advantages over traditional advertising methods.
The main power of the system is your ability to refine and test
your results in real time , with ease, for a tiny commitment of
dollars.
I didn't have
much success with my Adwords trial earlier this year, but
after reading this I'm going to give it another go.
6. Hidden
Roibot links...
It's usually
unwise to display tracking links in ezines and ads
because it shows that you're trying to sell people something.
It's much better
to take a soft sell approach. Your web site visitors /readers don't
want to be "sold to". They want information and entertainment.
So usually it's
best to hide links such as
http://www.roibot.com/w.cgi?IM6892_adwords
One way you
can do it is like this
http://www.ozemedia.com/adwords/
I've simply
hidden the Roibot link in a new directory on my web site. Here's
the html code to do it:
<html><head>
***meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;
url=http://www.roibot.com/w.cgi?IM6892_adwords"**
</head></html>
Note: to stop
this automatically refreshing I've changed it slightly. You need
to replace *** with < and ** with >
Just open up
your web authoring program and start a new directory for the product
you want to promote.
eg: adwords.
Then start a
new page, go to code view and replace the content
with the above code. Replace my Roibot link with your own affiliate
link, and save the file as the index page in the new directory.
Then upload it to your server.
Sounds complicated
doesn't it? But it's really simple and once you
get used to doing it you'll find it only takes a minute for each
new
affiliate program you want to promote.
If you'd like
to use Roibot why not take
advantage of their $1 trial
7.
Grow your list from 1000 to 480,000 in 1 week...
In December the Oneworld
Sports bar in Sydney, Australia
grew their email list from just over 1000 subscribers to a huge
480,000 in just a few days. At one stage they were getting 40,000
new subscribers an hour (I read this in an Australia marketing magazine,
butmaybe it's a mistake. 40,000 hits per hour seems more likely.
I'm not sure any mail server could handle dealing with 40,000 subscribers
per hour)
They did it
by using one of those "tell
a friend" type scripts. People had to enter the names and
emails of 15 friends and everyone who took part went in the draw
to win a pallet of beer "to share at a Christmas party with
your friends". Within a few hours of them mailing details of
the competition to their 1000 subscribers new names started pouring
in. Later that day it was mentioned on local radio which made it
bigger.
The next morning
a newspaper mentioned the competition but didn't use the URL and
got the name of the bar wrong, so the next day they printed a correction
which included the URL.
Just shows that
this kind of thing can work, and quickly.
It seems there
was no mention of privacy and the Sports Bar is now making money
selling the list to advertisers and marketers.
