Letter from Phil

first I'm going to talk about a few products you should look at using,
but then lower down write about people getting bogged down buying
everything new that comes along, and never actually achieving anything
with it.

So this is a bit of a contradiction in terms, but it can't be helped.

Now that I'm running a full time Internet business I'll be spending a
lot more time at my Affiliate Talk discussion forum.

Why don't you join me. I'll be there most days. It's a good place to
learn things, but please...don't post your ads there.

Phil

1. Flying heads...

Here's an offer I've come across, that's so amazing it will make your
head start spinning and fly off your shoulders.

First go to http://www.lifetimewebhosting.com/ and look at the $249
Plus package. Sounds good, but don't be tempted to sign up. Close
that page and now to Web Lock Pro

Read about the product, which protects people stealing your web
site code,
and take a good hard look at the first bonus you get
when you buy Web Lock Pro.

That's it.

2. Yahoo, Google, and link reputation...

The changes this week at Yahoo are big news. If you haven't heard
about these changes, basically Yahoo directory results and Google
web pages are now blended together.

Suddenly, getting a high ranking in Google is more important than ever.

Sidebar_________________________________________________

While we're on the Google subject here's a negative article
saying that recent changes to Google's ranking algorithms
have degraded their results:
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,55597,00.html

_______________________________________________________

Although Google takes into account 100 factors when it's deciding
which page will appear in top position, the number and quality of
sites linking to you is of high importance.

So what do you do?

I'd like to suggest you get hold of a program called Optilink Page
Reputation Analyzer
.

You can use it to

- Optimize your site to improve the link consistency of your pages.

- Add and modify the incoming links to you more effectively.

- Narrow the focus of your pages.

- Identify Authority sites related to the topic, or theme, of your site
so you can contact them to get links to your site.

- Find the keywords and Authority sites your competitors are using
to improve your own pages and popularity.

It doesn't sound very exciting, but this program could well
determine whether you're going to languish in position 637 or
move into the top 10.

Read more about it here

3. Short links...

A number of people have asked me about how I made the short
links http://www.ezinetools.com and http://www.ezinepro.com
I used in last weeks issue.

No tricks. They're simply domains I own and have never got around
to using. I've registered maybe 50 domain names, but never found
time to build sites around some of them.

Now that I've got an account which lets me host 200 sites for 1
low monthly fee
I decided that I may as well make use of some
of my domain names for linking to affiliate programs and products.

4. Search Engines and Javascript Tip...

Does using Javascript hurt your search engine position?

Well search engine's don't read Javascript, but they DO have to wade
through all the code.

The best thing to do is put your Javascript, or scripts, into an external
file. This will get rid of all the code bloat and make it easier for the
search engines get to your content. And the easier it is for them to
get to that, the better.

Example: you probably use Javascript rollovers in your websites
navigation bar. These nav bars use quite a few lines of code, and
usually it all comes at the top of your page before the body content.

By putting this Javascript into an external file you make the search
engine robots job easier. Does it affect your rankings? I think the
jury is still out on that one.

However, removing the code bloat will certainly make your pages
load faster. (see section 8, Phenylketonuria and CSS...for more
on code bloat).

5. How to stop your product being pirated...

If you're selling your own ebooks or software you'll be aware that
piracy is a big and growing problem.

Some people buy your product then pass it on to friends, but much
worse some people illegally sell it, usually by including it in a resale
rights package.

Five times this year I've caught people illegally selling my book,
Mini Site Profits.

Now, at last, there are a couple of products to help protect you
from theft: Mike Chen's Clicklocker, and Mark Idzik's Digital Order
Guard.

They're both designed to do different jobs, and they're both useful.

Mark's Digital Order Guard protects you if people pass along (as often happens) the link to your download page.

Digital Order Guard generates a small protection script that you copy and paste into your existing product download page and you're
protected .. all in just a few minutes. It works with both Clickbank and PayPal and includes a nice bonus affiliate link generator for ClickBank
merchants as well.

Sidebar_________________________________________________

Mark's also got an excellent product out called Affiliate Profit Guard,
which helps stops people changing your affiliate links to their own link.

I've been using it for a week or so now and it's both simple to use
and efficient. There are no complicated scripts to upload to your
server. In seconds you can create a hidden, and scrambled, link that
stops commission stealers dead in their tracks. You need to use this
kind of link to protect your commissions. There are plenty of other affiliate
link protectors around, but I've found this to be the easiest to use and one
of the hardest to crack.

Mike Chen's Clicklocker is a completely different kettle of fish,
and probably the most useful of the two products.

Clicklocker doesn't work by preventing people accessing your download page, instead it works by disabling pirated, or refunded copies of your product.

There are just two problems with Clicklocker.

The first is that it only works with products sold through Clickbank
and the second is that it currently only works with .exe files.

I asked Mike about this, and a few other things, and he said he's
working on a .pdf version.

Mike: "Currently ClickLocker only works on EXE files, but a PDF version
is in the works. I haven't decided on the pricing but it might involve a
small additional fee to the current pricing. However, it will be free to any
ClickLocker members who sign up before it's complete. I expect to be
done testing and have it out in 1-2 weeks."

Phil: Can it be used to lock cds as well? And if so will it work to lock
music cd's or cd's of software?

Mike: Yes, it can! However, a ClickBank receipt is necessary for
ClickLocker to work, so as long as the product is purchased through
ClickBank it will work.

Phil: Do people have to be online to access the ebook/software every
time they want to open it? Or just the first time?

Mike: The program will need to validate with the license servers the first
time it is run. After that, if the user is offline or can't access the ClickLocker servers, the product will still run. If you de-activate the product for that user, the next time the user is online and runs the program it will be de-activated.

Phil: What happens if publishers update their ebook/software frequently?
Do readers need access to the receipt number again?

Mike. The customer will only need to enter the information ONCE, and
as long as that license is valid (potentially forever), they will never need
to enter it again.

If you sell your product through Clickbank you can get Clicklocker here:

6. Poll results...

I'd like to thank everyone who took part in last weeks poll

< http://www.ezinetools.com > (poll no longer active)

A high 68% wanted to read my newsletter on a weekend, with
Saturday just edging out Sunday. Surprisingly, to me, Monday
was the next in line, with Thursday being the least favorite day.

70% want one issue a week, and just 11% said they only have
time to read short newsletters with the majority of people saying
the length isn't important it's the content that counts.

69% want back issues archived, so I'll start working on that soon.

And 69% want more how-to-do-it stuff.

7. Where are you going wrong...?

two weeks ago I wrote that I wanted to employ someone to do
some online office work for me, maybe one day a week.

I even put "it's not exciting work."

Well I've got to tell you that I've been shocked, and overwhelmed,
by the number of people looking for work. Almost 1 in 90 newsletter
readers have applied.

So let me add another word to shocked and overwhelmed.

Saddened.

If so many people...people interested in affiliate programs and
Internet marketing...need to look for this kind of work, it means
that this newsletter, and others like it, aren't doing a good job.

We're not properly helping you make an online income from
affiliate products, resale rights, product creation, and setting up
your own online business.

I might not be talking to you here.

You might be one of the people making a good online income,
and I hope you are. But what if you're not?

Where are you going wrong?

(Look, if you're one of the people who applied, I'm not attacking
you here. I'm just sorry that I, and other people who have been
around a long time are failing to help you make a decent online
income).

I've been thinking deeply about this all week.

Well deep for me, that is. Which isn't very deep.
I think there are two main problems.

One, and it's a major one, is that so many people fail to take
action. They just flutter around without actual doing anything,
without aiming at a target and doing all they can to fly straight
towards it.

The other is that it's so easy to get sidetracked by the huge
number of new products that flood onto the market every
month, begging for attention - should you be buying them all,
using them all, trying to sell them all? NO.

I only use and promote a small number of the one's I get invited to.
I've got no choice, and neither have you. Try to use and/or
promote them all and you'd never do a good job with any of them.

It's far too easy to get bogged down buying product after product,
or hopping from one hyped affiliate or MLM program, or the latest
"get tons of traffic" scheme, to another. Never settling long enough
in one place for results to start coming in.

If you want to make money from affiliate programs then pick just a
few to promote and go all out with them.

(I'm not saying ignore the new products. Just choose wisely. Go
for quality, for something with mid to long term potential, not some
hyped up piece of rubbish).

And take ACTION. Do something.

When you pick a product to promote, something you feel has
reasonable mid to long term value, create a site to promote it.
I don't care if it's a big content site or a mini site, just get stuck in
and do it.

You've probably got a favorite ebook or program. Something you
really love. Well for heavens sake build your site around that.

Write some content. It doesn't need to be brilliant, you're not writing
for Esquire here, you're just writing something for a person like
yourself. And your site doesn't have to look amazing either. Keep it
simple. Just get the thing up and running. You can always tweak
it later. Just do it.

Oh yes, and if you haven't read it yet, get hold of my book
Mini Site Profits which will show you how to do all this :)

(by the way there are some new affiliate help pages on this
site
)

8. Phenylketonuria and CSS...

My daughter Kate has a rare genetic disorder called Phenylketonuria,
PKU for short. Basically it means her body can't break down protein
so the amount of protein she consumes has to be very carefully
regulated. It's probably the world's strictest diet, but when you know
that eating a steak or drinking a milkshake could give you brain
damage you're certainly got an incentive to stick to the diet.

Kate's just put up a site called PKU Living

It took less than a day to build, with my help, so I thought you might
like to take a look at as an example of what you can achieve in a
single day if you put your mind to it and don't get distracted.

With only around 1 in 16,000 children being born with PKU the
audience is never going to be huge, but she's hoping it's going to
pay for itself with donations and some affiliate sale from Amazon links.

It's the first site we've used cascading style sheets ( CSS ) styles
on, and I'm surprised at how much quicker it is to add new content
when using CSS.

Not only is it quicker, the html pages are much smaller, so the pages
load faster. Using CSS removes a great deal of the HTML bulk from
the weight of your pages. With CSS you define the colors and sizes
using styles. Then as you write your documents, you refer to the
styles. So, if you change a certain style it will change the look of
your entire site.

9. Remember to go outside sometimes and breath the fresh air...

A 24-year-old South Korean man died after playing computer games
nonstop for 86 hours, police said yesterday. (October 10th)

The jobless man, identified by police only by his last name Kim, was
found dead at an Internet cafe in Kwangju, 260 kilometers southwest
of Seoul, they said.

Quoting witnesses, police detective Oh Myong-sik in Kwangju said
the man had been virtually glued to the computer since late last
Friday and had no decent sleep and meals.

The man collapsed in front of the counter early yesterday but soon
regained consciousness. He then went to the toilet where he later
was found dead, the police officer said.

Initial investigation ruled out the possibility of murder, police said.
An autopsy was planned.

South Korea is among the world's most Internet-savvy nations with
more than half of its 47 million people having access to the Internet.
South Korea has some 22,000 Internet cafes, also known as PC rooms.

Many PC rooms are open 24 hours, but no minors are allowed after 10 pm.
