wheretheheckavabin?
I don't know if you've noticed, but I've
been missing.
Not missing in the X-files sense, or ill, or
on holiday. Apart from a couple of quick connections I've just
been missing off the net for over 3 weeks.
It started with my computer shooting up a message
saying I'd lost my satellite internet connection, then I'd get
the blue death screen and it would take me ages to get back in.
Files got corrupted, email got scrambled, Windows didn't want to
start back up, files went missing.
| CENSORED....I wrote a lot here, then
suddenly realized I could get sued so I've just killed it
all. But basically my satellite connection is hopeless. And I'm
getting rid of it in a couple of days. |
Anyway, it's now so supposed to be fixed. So
I tried keeping my fingers crossed and logged on to get my emails.
Over 4000 of them. AGH! And probably 95% of them
are spam. Looks like I'm going to have to kill my email address
and start using a new one, but if I do that I'll let you know.
Meanwhile...just 2 blue screens since Friday
morning. A HUGE improvement, but not good enough.
Personally
I think I'm just too high up on this mountain and the satellite
keeps hitting the dish as it flies past.
So here's what
I'm going to do.
Can the satellite.
I know I haven't had it long,
and paid a huge installation fee, but I just can't live with
it.
But I'm not going back to dialup, I'm going wireless.
Yep, I just found out that a company in the nearby
city have quietly started offering Wireless connections to local
businesses.
Only 6 companies are using it so far, because
it's not been advertised. But I managed to track them
down on Saturday and talked them into opening their office to give
me a demo, and they're coming on Monday to do some tests to see
if I've got good line of sight to their aerial. Seeing it's on
the next mountain top I reckon I should get a better connection
than they do in town :)
Mind you, the download speed isn't as good as
my satellite. The tests I ran in their office, via www.dslreports.com
showed a speed of about 195k a second, where I'm getting around
360k at the moment.
Upload, however, is a different matter. Currently
I've only got 26k upload, their system was about the same as download
at about 184k a sec.
But that's going to be a whole lot better for
my needs Why? Because one-way satellite, like I've got, doesn't
work with FTP. So all the files I upload to my server have been
crawling to my site at 26k.
Ok, that's the end of the story I guess.
Just 4000 + emails to sort through, and catch
up on all the work I've fallen behind with.
Do you know how hard it is to run an Internet
business when you can't get online?
Well let me keep any swearing out of this, and
just say it's very, very hard.
